The Edel Headquarters is part of a larger masterplan that reimagined a run-down stretch of former industrial waterfront as a civic and cultural corridor, a strategic initiative by the city of Hamburg combining flood protection infrastructure with the ambition to spark urban transformation.
Designed for Edel, an independent music and media company, the building was conceived as a tailor-made structure reflecting the youthful, informal spirit of the music industry: a campus-like environment and an open, inclusive space fostering creative exchange between employees, guests, and artists from around the world.
Occupying a pivotal site on Neumühlenstrasse, the building embraces the water, forming a semi-public courtyard that strengthens the relationship between the built space and the river. The ground floor—soaring to a height of 10 metres—is conceived as a transparent plinth accommodating public functions, with floor-to-ceiling glazing and a fully openable façade that dissolves the boundary between interior and exterior, creating a vibrant ground plane where informal gatherings and programmed events blend into the surrounding urban landscape.
