The competition entry for the relaunch of the GAM – Galleria d’Arte Moderna (Civic Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art) in Turin (designed by Bassi & Boschetti in 1959), is conceived as a genuine refoundation, integrating the historic building into its urban context through a dialogue between modern and contemporary architecture. The project, selected among the finalists, creates new urban permeability, transforming the ground floor into an open museum that connects the building with the city. New architectural elements enhance the experience of art, expand spaces for contemporary works, and engage with the museum’s historic identity, renewing both its presence and heritage.
Architecture and landscape merge to form a system linking the city, the existing museum, and the new additions. The former garden is reimagined as a contemporary agorà, while the new entrance introduces a multimedia monolith that extends the museum’s content outward, equipped to host digital artworks and connect to global cultural platforms.
Central to the renewed identity is the underground hall, which doubles as a space for temporary exhibitions and becomes the new heart of contemporary art at GAM, while the opening of the storage areas within the reception space allows visitors to immediately perceive the vitality of the preserved collection offering a preview of the artworks and themes they will encounter along the museum route.
